23 more truckloads of relief goods from Albay off to Leyte, Samar; Navy commissions more ships to augment relief ops

LEGAZPI CITY, Nov. 18 (PIA) – AT least 23 more truckloads of relief goods from the province of Albay were deployed Sunday off to Leyte and Samar provinces that have been devastated by super typhoon “Yolanda.”

Albay Gov. Joey Sarte Salceda said the items on board included food packs from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and donations transmitted from the local governments of Guinobatan, Polangui, and other private organizations.

The relief goods were repacked by “Tarabangan Albay para sa Tacloban at Leyte”, composed of volunteer individuals from all ages and walks of life in Albay and organizations from private and public schools, Albay-based government agencies and offices working on a three-shift daily.

“This the longest and the biggest convoy of trucks loaded with relief items for Yolanda victims set out for Leyte and Samar,” Salceda said.

The goods went along with uniformed men and volunteers to augment the relief operations in the Visayas.

Salceda furthered the transport of the relief goods was organized by the Office of Civil Defense-Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council in Bicol, DSWD 5 and Team Albay

In Matnog, additional commercial roll-on roll-off (RORO) vessels are expected to augment the existing sea vessels bound for Samar, which  Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) is now making necessary coordination with shipping lines.

 “Petroleum tankers bound for Samar and Leyte will also be given priorityto ensure fuel supply in the area,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Navy has deployed BRP Dagupan city (LC 551), a logistics support vessel, and BRP Tagbanua (AT 296), a landing craft utility vessel, from Cebu City to Matnog Port in Sorsogon to augment commercial ships to ferry relief goods,  civilian and military responders, according to Naval Forces Southern Luzon (Navforsol).

Navforsol also stated that four more Philippine Navy Auxiliary Reserve Unit (PNARU) vessels manned by naval reservist will be deployed today to augment the disaster response and relief operations in the Visayas region.

The Philippine Navy has also commissioned MV Maria Natasia, another PNARU vessel, that has since transported relief goods, military troops, disaster responders and trucks from Matnog port.

The augmentation of Philippine Navy vessels are solely for relief and disaster response purposes. Priorities will AFP, PNP, government line agencies and local governments.  (MAL-PIA5/Albay)
