LEGAZPI CITY, Nov. 19 (PIA) -- The Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Bicol will bike its way to clean air through a fun-bike event to cap the onservance of National Clean Air Month this year.
Dubbed as “Pidal Para sa Gabos Para sa Malinig na Paros (Bike for all, for clean air) Part 2”, the event is a 20-kilometer fun-bike contest that will be held on November 23 in this city.
“We are promoting cycling as an efficient, environmentally friendly and healthy mode of transport,” EMB Bicol regional director Roberto Sheen told the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Bicol.
The event also aims to educate the public about the environmental benefits of biking by reducing emissions for cleaner air.
“We want to raise awareness of the Clean Air Act of 1999, the anti-smoke belching campaign and actions to reduce emissions," Sheen added.
Sheen clarified that the activity is not a racing event however prizes are at stake for different categories.
“This biking activity will be unique since we are encouraging the participants to wear eye-catching outfits to represent different professions such as doctor’s garb, religious habit or even animal costumes, or designs that represent the theme, Usok mo, buhay ko (your smoke, my life),” Sheen said.
Up for grabs are special awards for most number of team riders, oldest rider, youngest rider, unique bicycle, best dressed rider, early birds for male and female categories. The winners will be given cash rewards, t-shirt and certificate of recognition.
"The participants are also encouraged to register as a team with three or more members to emphasize the spirit of working together for cleaner air,” Sheen said.
Another unique feature of the event is the pit stop challenge which requires participants to finish a task and answer questions in every pit stop to collect a pass token.
The event is open to all ages however participants under the age of 16 should be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Participants are advised to be at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) V compound, Regional Center Site in Rawis, this city at 5 a.m. on November 23 for the registration. The fun-bike event will start at 7a.m. (MAL/JJJP-PIA5/Albay)
