EDC’s Bacman named Saringaya awardee anew

SORSOGON CITY, August 18 (PIA) – For the seventh time, the Bacman Geothermal Business Unit (BGBU) of Energy Development Corporation (EDC) bagged anew the prestigious Saringaya Award  from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) Bicol regional office

The Bacman steamfields and power plants previously won the award in 2001, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2013.

DENR-EMB bestowed the award to BGBU for its long established programs and initiatives that protect the natural ecosystem, management of watershed resources and empowering communities that are aligned with DENR’s environment and natural resources goals.

This year’s awardees were chosen based on criteria founded on five pillars of good environmental governance, namely, environmental protection, conservation and rehabilitation, sustainability of the project and socio-economic and environmental impacts.

Honored of the award given, BGBU Vice President Liberato Virata said that beyond producing clean energy, they will remain active in forest restoration and biodiversity preservation to maintain the robust ecosystem services for the use of all our stakeholders in our geothermal reservations and secure our natural heritage for the benefit of future generations.

“This award inspires us even more to pursue the green path.  It is an affirmation that we are doing the right thing and that we are not alone in our advocacy,” he further said.

Saringaya Award is given to industries, non-government organizations, people organization, local government units, groups or associations, other government agencies, the Academe and other entities in the Bicol region who, as a group, corporate body or individuals have supported DENR Bicol through the establishment and implementation of the program towards protection, conservation, and safety of the environment.

During the awarding, EDC and BGBU were also recognized for being an important partner in the success of the Eagle Quiz Competition from 2006 to 2016.  Eagle Quiz or “Battle of the Eagles” is one of the highlights of the region’s Environment Month Celebration.

The contest which is being participated in by selected elementary and junior high school students from both public and private academic sectors in the entire Region is part of DENR-EMB’s campaign on environmental regulations, protection of ecosystems and conservation of natural resources.
