DILG to conduct training for new elected officials

VIRAC, Catanduanes, June 28, (PIA) -- The  Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) provincial office here is set to conduct series of orientations and trainings for newly elected local officials starting first week of July 2016.

According to DILG Catanduanes provincial director Uldarico S. Razal Jr., the activity aims to address gaps in local governance and to achieve unity of purpose within Local Government Unit (LGU).

He also bared that three newly-elected first-time mayors Samuel V. Laynes of Virac, Raul Tabirara of Pandan and Emeterio Tarin of Viga underwent a two-day basic orientation program conducted by DILG Local Government Academy.

Part of the Newly-Elected Officials (NEO) Program, the training expects participants to complete their first 100 days calendar and their respective development commitment agenda at the end of the two-day orientation.

Topics were governance and decentralization, duties, responsibilities and Accountabilities of elected local officials, strategic management, leadership, climate change and disaster management, local economic development, crisis management, and peace and order.

Director Razal added that municipal mayors, vice-mayors and councilors, as well as department heads of the 11 towns of the province will undergo a half-day orientation to be conducted by the DILG starting next week in a bid to improve inter-departmental relationships for better teamwork.

The LGU briefings will use the respective local situationer using the LGU scorecard known as local TARGET (Transcending Accountable and Responsive Governance through Empowerment and Teamwork).

The scorecard aims to document baseline data for governance and development aligned with the United Nations (UN) sustainable development goals for 2016-2030. (MAL/EAB-PIA5/Catanduanes)
