Bicol bags four Gawad Kalasag Hall of Fame awards

LEGAZPI CITY, Apr 8 (PIA) – Bicol region has notched four out of five National Gawad Kalasag 2015 Hall of Fame awards.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) announced Legazpi City as the Best CDRRMC (Independent/Component City), Brgy. Oro Site for Urban category, Simon of Cyrene as Best Civil Society Organization and D.Q. Liwag National High School in Vinzons, Camarines Norte as Best School in Public Rural category.

Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Bicol has commended the awardees particularly the LGUs and agencies noting the recognition as a milestone for the region in DRRM.

“We, in the Office of the Civil Defense 5, commend the great efforts of our awardees most especially the leadership in the LGUs and the respective agencies. Gawad Kalasag award is one way to showcase best DRRM practices in the local areas and at the same time to boost the resiliency in our region. I congratulate the awardees for taking a milestone for DRRM.”OCD Bicol director Bernardo R. Alejandro IV said.

The Hall of Fame award is given to local government units, organization or agency that has won as 1st place for three consecutive years on the same category.

Also declared winners are Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital - 1st place for Government Hospitals National Category, Moreno Integrated School in Daet Camarines Norte - 2nd for Public Schools Urban Category and Buraguis Day Care Center in Legazpi City – 2nd for Early Learning Center  Urban Category.

Chief Insp. Achilles M. Santiago, MM from the Bureau of Fire was given special award for Heroic Act, Individual category.

The Bicol region has likewise notched Gawad Kalasag Hall of Fame awards in the previous years. The awardees include PDRRMC Albay, MDRRMC Sto. Domingo, Child Sponsorship for Community Development Inc. (CSCDI) in Legazpi City and MDCC Labo, Camarines Norte (now MDRRMC).

Daraga National High School and MDCC Calabanga, Camarines also bagged Gawad Kalasag awards.

KALASAG stands for KAlamidad at Sakuna LAbanan, SAriling Galing ang Kaligtasan. Gawad Kalasag awards is given to individuals, non-government organizations, private sector and government organizations, in recognition of their initiative in helping the Filipino government uplift the standard of disaster management in the country.

This year’s 17th Gawad Kalasag Awarding Ceremony is tentatively scheduled on April 18, 2016.(MAL/SAA-PIA5/Albay)
