LGU Naga and DOLE celebrate Labor Day with Jobs and Livelihood Fair

By: Ana-Liza S. Macatangay

NAGA CITY, May 4 (PIA) --- More than 3,000 job vacancies from 49 local companies and 14 overseas employers were at stake during the recently concluded Jobs and livelihood Fair held recently at the SM City Naga Activity Center, here, in line with the Labor Day celebration, Friday.

The activity, with the theme “Disenteng Trabaho at Kabuhayan, Alay Natin sa Bayan”  is a joint endeavor of the City government of Naga through the METRO PESO, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Regional Office, SM City Naga, ABS-CBN and other government agencies.

Mayor John Bongat expressed his appreciation to the city’s partners and thanked the partakers for their unwavering support during the activity. He lauded the employers who gave jobseekers the opportunity to be a productive part of the society by providing them decent jobs.  Bongat also conveyed his belief that one of the greatest acts of public service is the sincere intent of its leaders to arm their constituents with an opportunity to work and prove their own worth.

DOLE Regional Director Nathaniel V. Lacambra said that they want to reach as many jobseekers as possible, especially those based in Naga City and from the nearby municipalities that’s why they decided to conduct a 2-day fair here.  Naga is the only DOLE area where the Job and Livelihood Fair was conducted for two days, others wrapped up their event only on May 1.

“We have 3,000 job vacancies here aside from the 2,000 available in Legaspi City where a similar event is simultaneously being conducted.  We really want to address the problem of unemployment and provide our jobseekers with the best job that will suit their skills and capabilities,” Lacambra added.

METRO PESO Manager Ruel Oliver who is concurrently the Executive Director of the Naga City Investment Board said that the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) remains to be on the top most list as employers, particularly taking their pool of workers from fresh graduates.  He said that the BPO industry will continue to grow as more and more BPO companies are expressing their intent to put up their business in the city.

Oliver also made mention of the Naga City Investment Board and LGU Naga’s on-going negotiation with foreign investors who will be willing to take their finances on putting up an industrial economic zone in the city in the upcoming years.

“If we are going to look at the job vacancies, setting aside the BPOs, we can see that there is a great demand for production or manufacturing industry.   Unfortunately, that is not here in Bicol. Yet we are not giving up on hope that we can have one in the near future. The City government of Naga under the headship of Mayor Bongat is now seriously looking into that possibility. Hopefully, in the next two years,” Oliver said in an interview.

Once the project is materialized, Oliver said, it will greatly help those who were not able to finish college but are skilled to land a job and eventually alleviate their economic condition.

SM City AVP Engr. John Jason T. Terrenal left a piece of advice to the jobseekers before concluding the simple program.  “I just want everybody to remember that the most important resource of any company is not the money, it’s not the structure.  It has always been the human resource.  So, for those who are here looking for jobs today, please love your work, the company that you’re working for, and make your parents and family proud of you.” (LSMacatangay, PIAV/Camarines Sur)
