By Sally Atento-Altea

LEGAZPI CITY, Mar 5 (PIA) – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) will formally present the 210 barangays in Albay chosen as recipients of the Barangay Forestry Program (BFP) on March 7, 2015 at the Albay Astrodome here.

Together with the presentation is the ceremonial signing of the memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the concerned barangay captains to be witnessed by Governor Joey Salceda and DENR Secretary Ramon Paje who will also keynote the said event.

DENR Bicol regional director Gilbert Gonzales said the new extension officers were hired to assist the department in conducting assessment and survey of the 210 target barangays of which 183 were deemed ready for the implementation of the program.

Albay is the first province to launch the BFP early last year through a MOA signed by Salceda as chairman of the Bicol Regional Council and DENR Bicol director.

The program has been allocated with P84 million as budget for 10,080 hectares targeted to be planted in until 2016.

BFP is part of the government’s National Greening Program (NGP) launched in 2011 which aims to plant 1.5 billion tree seedlings in 1.5 million hectares of reforestation areas in the country.

Salceda has earlier said that Albay had, in fact, started the NGP immediately upon its launch in 2011 with accomplishment of 53.68 percent or 5,410.77 hectares already planted by 2013 out of the 10,080 hectares target.

The province aimed to plant 2,115 hectares with 1,092,900 seedlings in 2014 and, 2,709 hectares with 1,965.500 seedlings this year.

Albay has likewise pursued reforestation initiative that increased the density of its forest coverage by 88 percent in seven years from 26,298.71 in 2003 to 44, 891.16 in 2010.

Reforestation activities were conducted mostly in Mount Mayon, Mount Masaraga and Mount Malinao notably known as the three famous peaks in the province. (MAL/SAA-PIA5/Albay)
