DTI installs Timbangan ng Bayan in Bicol public markets

LEGAZPI CITY, Feb 12 (PIA) -- The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has installed some 196 public weighing scales or ‘Timbangan ng Bayan’ in public markets all over the region.

Jocelyn Berango, DTI Bicol information officer, said the Timbangan ng Bayan project is in line with the department’s mandate of safeguarding the welfare of consumers by ensuring that they get their money’s worth.

As such, the DTI encourages consumers to validate or double check the weight accuracy of their purchased goods, like fish, meat, rice, and other goods through the weighing scales installed in all public markets.

“This is one way of deterring unscrupulous business / stall owners in public markets from tampering their weighing scales,” Berango said.

She furthered that local government units (LGUs) also support the department in this endeavor as part of their task to regulate and enforce practices relative to weights and measures.

For complaints and concerns on such issues, consumers can report to their LGUs or call DTI at 480-5720 or visit their office at 3F Capitol Annex Bldg., Legazpi City. (MAL/SAA-PIA5/Albay)
