Pope’s visit inspires youth leaders in Albay

LEGAZPI CITY, Jan 15 (PIA) – The province of Albay may not have been included in the itinerary for the visit of His holiness Pope Francis in the country but young people in the province, particularly youth leaders, are just as excited and inspired as the rest of the Filipino people.

Adelaine Bautista, Bicol University Student Council president, said the pope’s visit is an inspiration to be humble and compassionate in time for the declaration of 2015 as the Year of the Poor by the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP).

“The papal visit gives everyone inspiration to be humble, compassionate and to reach out to other people especially this year that it is the year of the poor. I think Pope Francis is a living example of blessedness. Despite of his holiness, he is always humble, keeping his feet on the ground, inspiring people and reaching out to the needy,” Bautista said.

College Student Council (CSC) President Menlyn Bautista said the coming of the pope is an inspiration to uplift the Filipino spirit particularly those still grieving from the loss of their loved ones during typhoon Yolanda.

“The upcoming visit of Pope Francis is very timely because amidst the political, economic and environmental issues in the Philippines, the coming of the Pope Francis uplifts Filipino spirit especially those who were badly damaged by supertyphoon Yolanda. So the presence of the pope is big help for those who have lost their loved ones or their families,” Menlyn said.

“And of course the papal visit is a symbolic event in the country because we, Filipinos, as somehow united by the coming of the pope,” she added.

Ana Theresa Valles, editor-in-chief of a school based publication, considers the visit as a big blessing for the Filipinos especially for the youth to show their faith as millions of people are united especially if more youth will take part in living their faith.

Moreover, she reminded her fellow youth to focus not only on the pope but his message and teachings as well.

“We should all remember that the pope is not God but an instrument God has sent ot guide the people. Thus we should focus more on the message and teachings the pope will bring and not on the pope only,” Valles stressed.

Sports advocate and Mr. State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) 2014 Leonard Mateos noted that the visit is a big help for the youth to be aware of the importance of humility and unity as shown by the pope.

“When I heard that the pope will visit the Philippines, I felt so happy. However when I saw how people prepared for the visit and how it unites people from all parts of the country, I realized that I should not only be happy  but also be thankful because we are all blessed by this event,” he said.

The Pope is set to arrive in the country this afternoon at around 5:45 at the Villamor Air Base.

He will be meeting with the youth in the country on January 18 at the University of Sto Tomas (UST).

CBCP executive secretary earlier said that the meeting is open to all young people. Although tickets have been issued to some 24,000 pre-selected youth representatives all over the country, those without tickets can proceed to the quadrangle.

Also part of the pope’s itinerary are meeting with families at the Mall of Asia (MOA) arena on January 16, lunch with the poor and survivors of calamities in Palo Leyte on January 17 and concluding mass at the Quirino Grandstand in Rizal Park on January 18 at 3:30 pm before he departs for Rome the following day.(SAA/AGCaratao-PIA5/Albay)
