LEGAZPI CITY, Jan 27 (PIA) -- Albay governor Joey Salceda has ordered the hoisting of flag at half- mast across the province in honor of at least 43 members of the Philippine National Police – Special Action Force (PNP-SAF) killed in an encounter with muslim rebels in Mindanao Sunday.
“Flags will be lifted half-mast all across the province of Albay to express the deep sorrow we share with the families who have been left behind by young heroes who lost their lives to serve and protect the nation,” Salceda said.
He particularly enjoined all offices of provincial, national and local governments including schools in the province to raise their flags at half –mast for the rest of the weekdays.
“This also serves as our moral outrage over this event while saluting the moral courage of our men in uniform,” the governor stressed.
All provincial government heads of offices and staff are also urged to observe a moment of silent prayer just opening their office in the morning in honor of the fallen uniformed men and in solidarity and condolence to their families.
The provincial capitol will likewise be draped in black.
“The provincial capitol being the seat of the power of the people of Albay will be draped in black to articulate our solidarity with their moral courage and dedication to serve our fellowmen.” he furthered.
A holy mass at Albay Cathedral will be offered tomorrow for the victims and their families.
The PNP earlier reported that the killed SAF members in the remote town of Mamasapano Maguindanao are in search for Zulkifli Abdhir, an alleged Malaysian bomb maker for the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) group which staged the 2002 Bali bombings and other deadly attacks.
Retrieval operations are currently conducted for other missing SAF members involved in the said encounter.(MAL/SAA-PIA5/Albay)
