DOLE to hire at least 7,700 displaced workers of typhoon Glenda

LEGAZPI CITY, July 23 (PIA) -- The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) regional office here is mulling to hire at least 7,700 Albayanos comprising more than 10 percent of the total number of families evacuated in the province following the devastation of typhoon Glenda on Tuesday last week, according to the agency's top regional official.

DOLE Bicol regional director Nathaniel V. Lacambra said the provision of emergency employment to residents, with the bulk coming from Albay province, affected by the typhoon will be implemented under the Tulong Alalay sa Ating Disadvantage Workers (TUPAD) program with some P25M allocated budget.

Lacambra clarified that workers to be hired will come from the areas hardest hit and labeled “priority” on the list of the Bicol Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) and Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils across the region.

Based on the Bicol RDRRMC data, Albay recorded at least 62,951 families or 308,046 individuals from 160 barangays that were evacuated.

"TUPAD will start up implementation in Albay considering this province suffered devastation the most from the recent typhoon Glenda and with the biggest number of families directly affected," he said.

In Albay, authorities from DOLE Bicol and Albay PDRRMC agreed in a recent meeting that Albay Public Safety and Emergency Management Office or APSEMO will identify the areas and the beneficiaries needing the “most” assistance.

“Rehabilitation requires team effort, thus data and recommendations from the Bicol RDRRMC and APSEMO regarding this concern will be our baseline. They are the ones in the field so they know which areas needed the most intervention.” he added.

It can be noted that as early as Wednesday, July 16, DOLE Bicol already received instructions from DOLE Sec. Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz to map out plans for rehabilitation of typhoon-stricken areas.

At that time, DOLE Bicol acting assistant regional director Atty. Karina Perida-Trayvilla initiated coordination with the regional DRR authorities to determina the baseline data on the damage extent and utilized to analyze as to the fastest intervention the agency can offer that is emergency employment.  (MAL-PIA5/Albay)
