DOH reports 77 firecracker injuries, 3 stray bullet victims in Bicol

BY: SALLY A. ATENTO

LEGAZPI CITY, Jan 2 (PIA) – The Department of Health (DOH) has recorded 77 firecracker-related injuries and three stray bullet victims in the Bicol region one day after the New Year revelry.

“As of today, 77 firecracker-related injuries have been reported in various parts of the Bicol region compared with 37 cases posted last year on the same period,” DOH Bicol medical analyst Evie Sarmiento said.

This figure is up by 108% compared last year.

Sarmiento said this increase may be due to availability of firecracker products and good weather unlike the rainy New Year’s Eve last year while some are simply hard headed.

Most of the injuries involve children with ages ranging from 7-12 and teens from 13-20.

Albay has the highest with 31 cases, Camarines Sur with 19, Camarines Norte with 15 followed by Sorsogon with ten and Catanduanes with two.
No firecracker injury has been reported in Masbate.

Sarmiento said most of the injuries are caused by piccolo.

She also warned victims to beware of tetanus and advised them to go to their respective Rural Health Units (RHUs) to get anti-tetanus shots.

“DOH Bicol director Gloria Balboa has directed our RHUs to use the anti-tetanus shots for pregnant women to firecracker victims. They can have it for free,” Sarmiento said.

Meanwhile three victims of stray bullets have been reported in Camarines Sur.
