PILI, Camarines Sur, Nov. 15 (PIA)--- A humanitarian mission team composed of doctors, nurses and cadaver handlers left yesterday to give assistance to the survivors of Typhoon Yolanda in Western Samar.
The team, headed by Dr. Dennis Reforma, is composed of more or less forty (40) personnel who brought with them medicines and medical equipment like oxygen tanks, anti-tetanus serums and drugs, including oral and injectable antibiotics.
EDMERO Chief Luzena N. Bermeo said that PDDRMC Western Samar requested the said items after assessing the immediate need of the survivors.
The request was coursed through the Camarines Sur Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) and Environment Disaster Management and Emergency Response Office (EDMERO).
“We don’t want to bring other medicines which will not address the current need of the survivors and only allotted what has been requested from PDRRMC Camarines Sur. These items will be received by our counterpart in Catbalogan Operation Center,” Bermio said in an interview.
Aside from the medicines, the team also brought along with them basic rescue and retrieval equipment, emergency lights and other hospital minor equipment.
Part of the medical team will be three (3) doctors and twenty (20) nurses were part of CamSur PDRRMC’s disaster unit and have undergone trauma trainings. The team is headed by Dr. Manuel Jornales, Head of the Disaster Unit.
On top of helping other areas widely devastated by the super typhoon, the provincial government of Camarines Sur also continues to distribute food packs to the residents of the coastal towns in the province, particularly from the municipalities of Presentacion and Garchitorena who also experienced serious
Camarines Sur Governor Migel Villafuerte personally led the distribution of food packs containing rice, coffee, sardines, milk, sugar and other grocery items.
Bermeo said that the relief packs are only temporary measures to address the immediate needs of families who lost their houses but they are now looking into a long-term program to resolve the housing needs of the affected families.
In the coastal town of Presentacion, 12 barangays were affected by the storm surge. It displaced 4,247 families who live in Barangays Bitaogan, Patrocinio, Liwacsa, Baligian, Bulalacao, Cagnipa, Lagha, Maangas, Bagong Sirang, Buenavista, Pili and Sta. Maria. 116 houses were partially damaged while 134 were totally washed out in the shore.
The towns of Sangay, San Jose , Lagonoy and Caramoan- all towns located near the seashores were also affected by the storm surge. (MAL/LSM-PIA5/Camarines Sur)
