Newly elected officials, local registrars get updates on solemnizing marriages

VIRAC, Catanduanes, August 27 (PIA) - Eight chief executives and three local civil registrars  from the province of Catanduanes participated in the recently concluded 8th National Convention of Solemnizing Officers (NCSO) held at SMX Convention Center, Davao City .

The three-day event held annually aims to provide a venue for exchange of ideas and sharing of experiences of various solemnizing officers, civil registrars, other civil registry personnel, members of judiciary and stakeholders with regards to the conduct of marriage.

Moreover, it focuses on orienting newly elected and appointed solemnizing officers to be well versed with the laws on marriage and to update other officials and civil registrars with changes and enhancement on marriage laws and civil registration in general.

According to Ms. Anavi F. Camacho, OIC Provincial Statistics Officer, as chief executives of the local government unit, the municipal mayors as are designated authority to solemnize a marriage other than the appointed solemnizing officers of various religious groups, members of judiciary, etc., as provided in article 7 of the family code of the Philippines.

The municipal mayors are therefore expected and duty bound to observe strict implementation of marriage laws of the Philippines.

The MCRs meanwhile as responsible person for marriage registration needs to be updated with the latest laws and changes on civil registration.

Participants from the province were mayors from the towns of Bagamanoc, Bato, Caramoran, Gigmoto, Pandan, San Miguel, Viga, and Virac while the Municipal Civil Registrars were from the towns of Gigmoto, San Miguel, and Virac.

Also present in the event are NSO Administrator Carmelita N. Ericta, PAO Chief Persida Acosta and NSO Civil Registration Department Director Lourdes Hufana. (MAL/EAB-PIA5/PIA Catanduanes)
