Catanduanes steps up promotion for preservation of natural ecosystem

VIRAC, Catanduanes, Aug. 30 (PIA) - To ensure the protection and preservation of the island’s natural resources, the provincial government of Catanduanes reorganized the Provincial Solid Waste Management Board (PSWMB).

Catanduanes governor Araceli Wong said that the reorganization is pursuant to Republic Act No. 9003 otherwise known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 Section 11 of DILG Memorandum Circular 2001-19 dated March 2, 2001.

PSWMB will now be composed by Wong as the chairman and the municipal mayors of the eleven (11) towns as members along with board member Nel B. Asanza, provincial helath officer Lubelia M. Sanchez,  Engr. Abelardo A. Abundo of the Provincial General Services Office, environment and natural resources officer Marlon D. Iñigo, and provincial engineer Felix U. Vargas, Jr.

PSWMB, according to Wong, will ensure the development of a Provincial Solid Waste Management plan from the submitted solid waste management plans of the respective municipal solid waste management board which shall reflect the general program of action and initiatives of the provincial government.

The board, she said, will also provide the necessary logistical and operational support to its component cities and municipalities in consonance with subsection (f) of Section 17 of the Local Government Code and recommend measures and safeguards against pollution and for the preservation of the natural ecosystem; and 4) recommend measures to generate resources, funding and implementation of projects and activities as specified in the duly approved solid waste management plan.

According to Wong, in order to integrate, synchronize, monitor and evaluate the development and implementation of the provincial solid waste management plan, PSWMB shall convene joint meetings of the provincial and municipal SWMB at least every quarter.

She added that SWM when properly studied, planned and implemented will help preserve the natural resources of the province which serves as the island’s pride. Gov. Wong also asked for the support of every Catandunganons to make the future undertakings of the PSWMB and MSWMBs successful.  

Executive Order No. 17 was signed by Wong on August 12, 2013 for immediate implementation. (MAl/EAB-PIA5/Catanduanes)
