President Duterte visited Wednesday afternoon the headquarters of the 9th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army (PA) in Camp Elias Angeles in Barangay San Jose, this municipality for a troop visit and dialogue.

Maj. Gen. Manolito P. Orense, commanding general of the Army 9th ID, initially gave the President a situation briefing upon his arrival at the Officers’ Club at around 3:30 pm.

During his speech an hour later before the soldiers in Bicol, the President stressed on the encompassing problem on the proliferation of illegal drug, noting that the drug menace has since been and come to destroy the nation.

The President said the illegal drug problem will “destroy your children and the next generation” if not given full attention and preference by the government and all sectors of the society working together.

President Duterte said however “the technicality of the law makes it hard for me to deal with the problem on illegal drugs.”

“What is very disturbing about this country now, ang droga kasi within the government na ang away. (the fight against illegal drugs has reached the ranks of the government),” he added.

The President furthered ordered the military to come up with doctrines on how to deal with terrorism, noting that “Terrorism will come, I am sure. When? I do not know. So, learn to adjust.”.

He then promised them support in terms of firearms and equipment.

He also gave initial three Glock 30 and four magazines to the soldiers which he said were for use countering terrorism, while assuring them that they will be provided what is due to them to protect the people and the country.

“I will give you everything you need, just give me a good and safe republic to live in”, said the President.

President Duterte is the first Philippine president to visit the Philippine Army 9th ID, the headquarters of government militaty troops in the Bicol region since it was established in 2004.

Meanwhile, Presidential Communications Office Secretary Martin Andanar earlier said President Duterte has to visit the military camps just like the previous presidents to boost the soldiers’ morale and to personally interact with them on the government’s programs lined up for the AFP.  (MAL-PIA5)
