By Bennie A. recebido

SORSOGON CITY, Sept. 17 (PIA) – Bulusan volcano's phreatic explosion yesterday afternoon has no threat to the community, according to report of Sorsogon Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (SPDRRMO).

The document signed by SPDRRMO provincial head Engr. Raden Dimaano likewise said that there was no evacuation reported following the ash explosion.

However, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has maintained advisory to the local government units and the public that entry to the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited due to the possibility of sudden and hazardous steam-driven or phreatic eruptions.

Bulusan Volcano Bulletin issued by Phivolcs this morning said that six volcanic earthquakes including the explosion-type earthquake yesterday were recorded by the Bulusan Volcano’s seismic monitoring network, though steaming activity was not observed due to thick clouds covering the summit.

The volcano yesterday, at around 4:54 pm, startled residents and local rescue teams in four towns and one city in Sorsogon when a steam driven explosion occurred that lasted for approximately more than four minutes ejecting a high dark gray ash column reaching a 1500 meter-high from the crater rim and drifted to the North- East direction.

During the ocular inspection that was immediately conducted yesterday by the SPDRRMO, moderate ash falls were noted in Barangays Inlagadian, Escuala, Casay in Casiguran town and in Brgy Sta. Lourdes in the municipality of Barcelona.

Light ash falls were felt in Barangay Bentuco, Tigkiw and Togawe in Gubat and Barangays Bagacay and Alegria, also in Barcelona.

As reported, there were also presence of ash falls in Brgy. Bonga in Bacon District, Sorsogon City and in Barangays Carayat, San Fernando, Calao, Ulag, Sta. Lourdes, San Isidro, Perlas, Gogon, Maningcay, ,Briliante, Tupaz and Rizal in the town of Pto. Diaz.

According to Municipal DRRM Officer of Casiguran Louie Mendoza, more than 200 families were affected in Casiguran alone by the sudden explosion, and were right away given face masks and face towels.

PDRRM Council chair Robert Rodrigueza through the SPDRRMO directed all the concerned MDRRMOs to have a close coordination with him and the members for updates and possible response actions and likewise continue to monitor the condition of Bulusan Volcano and implement the Blue Alert status.

Meanwhile, Alert Level 1 or abnormal level remains in effect over Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon. This indicates that hydrothermal processes are underway beneath the volcano that may lead to more steam-driven eruptions.

DOST-PHIVOLCS is closely monitoring Bulusan Volcano’s condition and any new development will be relayed to all concerned. (BAR-PIA5/Sorsogon)
