DSWD programs contribute to the fast economic growth of Bicol, says NEDA

LEGAZPI CITY, Aug. 9 (PIA) -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Bicol regional office here has reaffirmed its commitment to further strengthen social protection programs and services to help uplift the live of the Bicolanos after alluded as one of the contributors in propelling the economic growth of Bicol region.

It can be recalled that Bicol regional director Agnes Espinas has credited the programs and initiatives of DSWD Bicol in helping achieve the significant growth of the regional economy in 2015.

Espinas noted that Bicol’s improving economic status was due to the continuing inter-agency efforts in the region, noting that of DSWD Bicol's as an example in the contribution to the economic growth with its various trailblaizing initiatives that now benefit the poorest of the poor in the remote areas.

Philippine Statistical Authority (PSA) Bicol regional director Cynthia Perdiz meanwhile said during the media conference on the 2015 Report on the Regional Economy of Bicol Region last week that the regional economy of Bicol recorded the highest growth rate of 8.4 percent which it has ever attained in terms of gross regional domestic product (GRDP).

Perdiz said Bicol region topped in terms of economic growth among other regions nationwide accelerating to 8.4 percent in 2015, almost double its pace in 2014.

According to her, the "services' sector has contributed the biggest share of the region’s economy with 56.1 percent while the "industry" share some 22.5 percent in 2015 which has improved by 2.8 percent in 2014.

DSWD Bicol has really bankrolled on services by investin in people through the Pantawid Pamilya Pilipino Program or 4Ps wherein a total of about 369,000 received benefits from conditional cash transfers in 2015.

With the2015 Listahanan household assessment, jobs were since generated in the other services sector employing 2,966 field staff all across the region for the conduct of the second round of assessment.

Moreover, the Kapit Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan - Comprehensive Integrated Delivery of Social Services or Kalahi-CIDSS has contributed on the other capital outlays with the construction of 1,370 classrooms for senior highs school, 221 community centers or multi-purpose buildings, 217 flood/river control structures and 215 school buildings. Some 7,843 core shelter units were also completed under the Core Shelter Assistance Program.(MAL-PIA5/Albay)
