By Ana-Liza S. Macatangay

CALABANGA, Camarines Sur, May 5 (PIA) --- President Benigno Aquino III will inaugurate today the Sabang Fishport  and Cold Storage Facility located at Barangay Sabang, here.

The Sabang Fishport Development Project under the supervision of the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) covers the construction of a fish port in a reclaimed back-up area with a terminal shed, including public comfort rooms within the vicinity.

The project is worth P50 million endeavors to develop a new fish port facility that will accommodate the fishermen’s catch coming from the eight (8) coastal towns along the shorelines of San Miguel Bay.  This is expected to enhance economic activity within the fishing village and alleviate poverty in the neighboring towns.

It is expected to benefit not just the local fisher folks but also the fish brokers or forwarders, construction suppliers and the local populace.

The President is also going to inaugurate and unveil the marker of the cold storage facility also located just a few meters away from the Sabang, Calabanga Fisport area.

The construction of the facility was supervised by the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) to address the numerous hitches affecting the fishermen especially concerning handling and distribution of fish and fishery products. This is also meant to preserve the catch and at the same time retain their quality until after its disposal.

The project aims to sustain the growth momentum of the local fishing industry and translate this growth into investments and jobs.

The Sabang Fish port accommodates 1,271 units of fishing bancas, a mixture of commercial fishing vessels, and both motorized and non-motorized bancas unloading more or less 13.61 metric tons a day.

There are 13 hectares of freshwater fishpond in Calabanga producing about 0.08 metric tons a day. Of the said produce, about 99 per cent  comes from the marine fisheries and only one percent from the aqua culture facilities.

The two projects are expected to uplift the lives of the residents and spill the growth in its neighboring barangays and municipality.

After the Calabanga visit, President Aquino will be in Naga City for the meeting of local leaders.   (MAL/LSM-PIA5/Camarines Sur)
