CWC launches “one million lapis” for kids‘education

By Julius Embile

LEGAZPI CITY, May 25 (PIA) – In their advocacy to promote children’s education, he Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) launches the “One Million Lapis” project with the target of collecting one million pencils for  less fortunate children.

The ‘One Million Lapis’ project is an endeavor of CWC, in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd), in preparation for the National Children’s Month celebration in November 2016.

By November, CWC plans to distribute one million pencils to children in-need of educational assistance, which is being envisioned to enter the Guinness Book of Records by 2016.

“The ‘lapis’ (pencil) is a symbolic representation of the child’s need to express ones ideas and feelings, be empowered through learning, in recognition of the importance of writing skills and materials.

According to CWC, there are far-flung areas in the Philippines where one pencil is divided into three by elementary students just so that they can share it and be able to write. This shows the lack of materials for writing compounded with inadequate school facilities and the long distance of travel from home to school.

In this project, drop-boxes where everyone can donate pencils will be available at government offices, SM Malls and National Bookstores.

All the pencils will be collected and counted on the kick-off celebration of the National Children’s Month in November 5, and will be distributed by DepEd by November 20.

“Education plays an important role in helping children develop, reach their potentials, be able to engage meaningfully and build resiliency, ” stated Elino Bardillon, head of CWC’s Public Affairs and Information Office.

“This means that ensuring education of a child promotes child protection by empowering them to build resiliency. Provision of quality and relevant education to girls and boys decreases their risks of becoming victims of violence,” he added.
