AKB: 'By Bicolanos, for Filipinos'

By Julius Embile

LEGAZPI CITY, May 20 (PIA) -- “Rest assured, we shall take good care of this mandate through sincere and dedicated service to our fellow Bicolanos and the Filipino nation.”, said AKO Bicol (AKB) Party-list Congressman Rodel Batocabe, following his party-lists recent victory on the 2016 National and Local Elections, last May 9.

As of 6:00pm of May 19, the result of the senatorial and party list group race for the said elections have been finalized, and the winners have been proclaimed. Taking the top spot for the party-list polls is AKO Bicol Party list, a congressional party list initially created to represent and voice the welfare of the Bicolano people since 2010.

AKB first started as a non-government organization named ‘SOS Bicol”, an outfit dedicated to providing rescue and assistance to Bicolanos victimized by natural calamities. The party list started gaining popularity and earned their first three congress seats in 2010, by imploring solidarity amongst the Bicolanos with the platform “Iboto ang Sadiri (Vote for your own)”.

With their victory on the 2010 elections, ranking second on the election results, the party list focused on education and disaster preparedness. Their congress representatives; Rodel Batocabe, Christopher Co, and Alfredo Garbin Jr., acted as proponents of twenty three house resolutions, authors/co-authors of eight house bills, and contributor to twenty three enacted laws.

In 2013, AKB bid for re-election, but it was not allowed by the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) due to alleged failure to represent the marginalized community. This, however, was disputed and escalated to the Supreme Court, causing COMELEC’s decision to be forestalled.

Once again, AKB targeted re-election this 2016 and impressively bags first place amongst 113 party lists candidates, with 1, 635, 274 votes or 5.2% voting percentage.

“Kudos to the Bautista-led COMELEC for the speedy, decisive and fair proclamation of winning party list.” said Batocabe, going beyond earlier altercation with the commission.

The victory of AKB, as it appears, is credited mainly on their answered call for a solid Bicolano support. According to reports, the party even garnered 347,777 votes in Camarines Sur alone.

According to statements released by AKB, they vow to provide quality service, not just for Bicolanos, but for all Filipinos. With the slogan: “Nakatabang na, ma-tabang pa (Have helped, Will help)”, the party list promises to continue help those in-need with a Bicolano heart.  (MAL/JBE-PIA5/Albay)
