Legazpi CIty strengthens Rabies prevention, control program

LEGAZPI CITY, Feb. 15 (PIA) -- Mayor Noel E. Rosal of this city has urged all village officials and barangay health workers (BHWs) to take the lead in creating awareness among their constituents the need for rabies prevention, control and eradication.

Rosal said leaders and health workers in the barangays have very significant role and responsibilities in cascading the program of the city government in ensuring rabies-free communities.

“We should prevent even cases of animal bites, especially by dogs which are the common carriers of rabies, by promoting responsible ownership of pets and enforcing policies that would keep animals from the streets and public places,” he stressed.

Dr. Nancy Andes, chief of the City Veterinary Officer (CVO), meanwhile said that her office has since been conducting regular vaccination of dogs in barangays.

“In our 2015 monitoring, some 18,000 dogs were vaccinated or almost 92 percent of the more 20,000 dog population in this city,” she added.

Andes pointed out that last year cases of dog bites increased, but no death recorded.

The CVO chief has also reiterated that barangay officials need to strongly implement the ordinance on rabies prevention and control to reduce the number of stray dogs in the streets and other public places in order to prevent cases of dog bites.

Andes added that the CVO will have a Search for Ten Outstanding BHWs, citing among the criteria that  the barangay he or she covers must have 100 percent dog population survey and 100 percent rabies vaccination.  The barangay must also conduct rabies awareness seminar and implement related ordinances.

CVO will also select 3 Best Performing Large Barangays and 3 Best Performing Small Barangays with the criteria of having 100 percent dog vaccination, zero casualty on rabies, zero stray dogs, programs implemented and ordinance enacted related to rabies control. (MAL/EPS-CGLegazpi/PIA5/Albay)
