Catanduanes guv assures assistance to senior citizens

VIRAC, Catanduanes, Feb. 23, (PIA) - Catanduanes Governor Araceli B. Wong has assured that the provincial government will never waver in promoting and protecting the rights of senior citizens.

Wong said in a meeting with the senior citizens held recently, the provincial government has initiated moves to ensure that Republic Act 9994 or otherwise known as Expanded Senior Citizen is implemented which stipulates that 1% of the internal revenue Allotment (IRA) for the annual budget of the province will be allocated for use of the elderly or senior citizens.

In 2015, during the 1st Senior Citizens Congress, the Provincial Social Welfare Development Office (PSWDO) distributed seven wheelchairs and hygiene kits to the elderly who attended the congress.

She added that RA 9994 which provides free laboratory tests, medicines and other benefits as well as projects geared for the care of the elderly is now being implemented in the eleven (11) municipalities or the province. The 1% of the total IRA of the province reached not less than P6 million for 2016.

Meanwhile, senior citizens has laid a proposal to Gov. Wong that the allotted budget shall be intended to the conduct of medical missions in every municipality to be spearheaded by the Provincial Health Office (PHO) for an evaluation of their overall health.

The Provincial Social Welfare (PSWDO) will then facilitate the medical assistance based on the prescription of laboratory requests issued by the attending physicians. This could range from disbursement of free-medicine worth P500 to free blood chemistry, eye glasses and metallic cane.

The same law mandated Barangay Senior Citizens Associations registered with the Office for Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA) to fund their proposed plans and activities for the year, appropriating therein atleast 1% of their total annual barangay budget.

The allocated budget shall be in the form of duly approved programs, projects and activities that shall meet the basic needs of and be beneficial to the senior citizens. (MAL/EAB/PIA5/Catanduanes)
