Albay steps up call to end VAWC

LEGAZPI CITY, Jan 29 (PIA) -- The Gender and Development (GAD) Office of the provincial government of Albay (PGA) has convened government line agencies in the province to discuss and develop activities and programs for this year’s celebration of the global campaign against Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC) dubbed the 1 Billion Rising.

Now on its third year, the 1 Billion Rising campaign was launched as a global campaign observed by women’s groups from many countries all over the world to serve as the biggest mass action in ending violence against women in human history.

Albay governor Joey Salceda has pledged his full support to all the activities in line with the said campaign hoping that it will help the women in the province to be given amplified voices and better access to services intended for their particular needs.

The governor likewise hopes that it will raise the consciousness and awareness of Albayanos  to significantly reduce VAWC cases and instances.

The celebration of 1 Billion Rising campaign in Albay on February 12 will start early in the morning with a parade starting from the Bicol University to the Penaranda Park.

The whole day event will also feature VAWC forums and symposiums along with other fun activities such as booths for the youth and musical sessions, all aimed to unify call for the eradication of VAWC.

This year’s 1 Billion Rising celebration is themed “Revolution” as a response to the escalating demand for justice and as a call to build upon the massive efforts of communities worldwide that also looked at the roots and causes of violence as part of their call for justice.(MAL/SAA-PIA5/Albay)
