LEGAZPI CITY, Feb 12 (PIA) – Hundreds of Albayanos gathered today to join the 1 Billion Rising global campaign to end violence against women converging at the Bicol University grounds early morning for a “Walk for Justice” towards Peñaranda Park, where the symbolic rites was held.

The provincial government of Albay led the celebration together with employees and representatives from various government agencies, non-government organizations, academe and other stakeholders to help create awareness and to urge the community to be one in the cause to end violence against women.

Glenda Ong Bongao, board member and chairman of the Committee and Women and Family of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan ng Albay (PGA), said in her speech that the PGA will exhaust all efforts to provide all the ordinances and actions that they can possibly provide not only to curb VAWC but strive for its total elimination.

“We will always be by your side, do not be afraid to fight abuse and violence, we will stand side by side, arms linked tight and we will overcome all obstacles that will stand in our way, this is not only your right as women, it is our fight as human beings,” Bongao stated.

During the program, heads and representatives of the various agencies and organizations pledged their commitment to carry on the global call of the One Billion Rising campaign.

The program also include symbolic dances led by female students of the Bicol University  and female employees of the Department of Labor and Employment and National Food Authority.

In the afternoon, the Team Albay Youth Organization (TAYO) led a focused group discussion for the youth in the province in hopes of instilling values to promote respect and justice for all women and children particularly victims of violence.

This year’s One Billion Rising theme “Revolution” continues the call to focus on marginalized women and to bring national and international focus to their issues; to bring in new artistic energy; to amplify Revolution as a call for system change to end violence against women and girls and to call on people to rise for others, not just for ourselves.(MAL/SAA/PGA/PIA5/Albay)
