NFA assures sufficient supply of rice in Camarines Norte in the wake of “El Niño”

By Rosalita B. Manlangit

DAET, Camarines Norte, Jan. 22 (PIA) – The National Food Authority (NFA) here has assured sufficient supply of rice in the province in the wake of the effects of El Nino which was felt since last quarter of 2015 and expected to affect the country on the first quarter of this year.

NFA Camarines Norte provincial manager Chona E. Brijuega said that stocks of rice as of January 20 this year is 69,584 which will last until 19 days based from the rice requirements of 3,680 bags per day in the province.

"This was aside from the other sources of rice which came from the local traders who distributes commercial rice. Also a total of 168,000 bags of imported rice will be allocated this year for the province," she said.

Brijuega explained that the province is a rice deficit area wherein local palay production is not enough to sustain its consumption requirement.

The rice sufficiency level for the last three years 2013-2015 is estimated at 85.81%.

She said that its commercial rice supply is augmented by stock inflow from the provinces of Camarines Sur, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija and Quezon where local traders procure their rice requirement.

For this year, with the forecasted El Niño which might have a negative effect on palay production, self-sufficiency level is expected to drop to 80.72%.

She added that for 2016 production in rice form is expected to be 1,084,200 bags with the consumption requirement of 1,343,200. This would have a deficit of 259,000.

Deficit in the production will be augmented with the coming 168,000 imported rice aside from the present stocks of 69,584 and the commercial stock inflow from the other provinces, thus the province will have enough supply of rice this year, she said.

Aside from this they are encouraging local farmers to sell their palay at the NFA with a buying price of  P17.00 per kilogram with incentives of P 0.20 for drying, P0.20 to P0.50 for delivery depending on the kilometers and P0.30 for Cooperative Development Incentive Fund (CDIF) for farmers organization.

A total of 247 NFA accredited distribution outlets are located in the 12 towns of the province in the bigasan sa palengke, barangay, parokya and barangay food terminal. Aside from these they also allocate in government agencies rice allowances, local government units especially during calamities.

On the other hand the NFA announced the schedule on the renewal of accredited retailers for January 2016 which are the towns of Basud, Talisay and Mercedes while on February 2016 are the remaining towns like Capalonga, Vinzons, Daet, Labo, Sta. Elena, Jose Panganiban, Paracale, San Vicente and San Lorenzo Ruiz.

This was discussed during the Talakayan sa PIA on air radio program of the Philippine Information Agency Camarines Norte facilitated by ICM Rose Manlangit and Reyjun Villamonte which was held recently over DWCN-FM.  The other guests were Ma. Fatima N. Bacuño, economist; Felisa M. Pobre, senior grains operations officer; and Candelaria S. Halton, administrative officer. (MAL/RBM-PIA5/Camarines Norte)
