More traffic lights for Naga to ease congestion

By  Ana-Liza S. Macatangay

NAGA CITY, Jan. 21 (PIA) --- Eight traffic lights will be installed at the main thoroughfares of this city anytime soon to help ease the congestion and build-up of vehiclesparticularly in routes going to the main business area of this city.

Mayor John Bongat announced during the recent Naga City Peace and Order Council (NCPOC) meeting that the new traffic lights worth P5.8 million will be set up along the Cory-Ninoy Avenue to SM-Mariners areas.

The traffic lights will cater to the Penafrancia area route, including the Magsaysay junction and streets leading to the Central Business Districts 1 and 2, streets passing through USI and Naga Cathedral, and junction of Roxas Avenue and Almeda highway.

This is in addition to the existing traffic lights located along the stretch of Elias Angeles Street, a populated area surrounded by big fastfood chains, commercial establishments, mall, church and plaza.

The traffic lights are also expected to ease the load of PSO officers or traffic enforcers in concentrating their jobs at the busy junctions and focus instead on other areas where they can set their attentions on maintaining peace and order.

Some six traffic enforcers are usually needed to man the flow of vehicles every day on the city’s busy streets, particularly during rush hours.

The additional traffic lights are also in anticipation of the opening of the various establishments in the city which are expected to draw more domestic tourists and shoppers in the upcoming months.

Some of the big commercial centers due to open and are now undergoing construction are Robinson's Mall in Almeda Highway, Star Mall along the Maharlika Highway in Barangay Del Rosario, SM City Naga Annex and other Business Processing Outsourcing (BPO) centers.

The project was also supported by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA).(MAL/LSM-PIA5/Camarines Sur)
