DOH posts 114 firecracker victims in Bicol

LEGAZPI CITY, Jan 4 (PIA) – The Department of Health (DOH) has recorded 114 firecracker related injuries in the Bicol region for the period December 21 - January 3, 2016.

DOH Bicol health education and promotion officer Kenn Nuyda said firecracker related injuries has greatly increased this year compared to the 89 total cases reported last year in the region from period December 21 – January 5, 2015.

Albay posted 62 cases, the highest among the provinces, followed by Camarines Sur  with 31, Masbate with 11, and Camarines Norte with six. Both Sorsogon and Catanduanes posted two firecracker victims.

Nuyda said of the 114 recorded cases, 57 are children aged 7-12 years old while 22 are from age bracket 13-20 and 12 are from age bracket 29-35.

“The figures are alarming. Majority of the victims are children who are supposedly still under the supervision of their parents so probably they have their parent’s consent in buying or using firecrackers,” Nuyda said.

47% of victims in 2014 also came from the 7-12 age group.

Eighty five are active users or directly handled firecrackers while 25 are passive and four are undetermined.

Nuyda said a victim of stray bullet has been reported in Masbate but is still undergoing validation.

Piccolo, although branded as illegal firecracker, remains the leading cause of injuries with 70 cases followed by Kwitis with 21 and five star with eight victims. (MAL/SAA-PIA5/Albay)
