KALAHI CIDSS beneficiaries in CamSur get P2.2M funding for fish processing facility

LEGAZPI CITY, Sept. 24 (PIA) -- Residents of Barangay San Juan in Del Gallego, Camarines Sur will soon have their own bangus (milk fish) processing facility after the Department of Social Welfare and Development provided a funding of P2.2 million under its Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan-Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (Kalahi-CIDSS) program.

DSWD Bicol regional director Arnel Garcia said the program on bangus seeks to help improve the quality of life of stakeholders through community-driven development providing a farming village an alternative source of livelihood.

He added that some 75 out 100 DSWD’s family-beneficiaries are also Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program beneficiaries.

The project involves the construction of a fish processing facility with a floor area of 180 square meters, which is expected to be completed this year.

It is designed to provide an alternative source of livelihood to the farming village, whose 75 out 100 DSWD’s family-beneficiaries are also Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipinoogram beneficiaries.

"The same village also constructed a farm-to-market road and a water system sub-projects through Kalahi-CIDSS," Garcia said.

Maria Asila Cabangon, one of the resident-beneficiaries, said,“Napagkaisahan po ng barangay na magkaroon nito dahil meron kaming 80 hectares na bangus fishpond na p'wede namin pagkakitaan araw-araw (The village folk decided to have this (fish processing facility) because we have an 80-hectare bangus fishpond from where we can get our daily income)."

Cabangon also added that the facility will employ women of the target household-beneficiaries to augment their daily income.

The residents of San Juan get poor income, especially after typhoons wherein their crops are destroyed.  As a result, they decided to focus on bangus production and proposed the construction of a fish processing facility to the Kalahi-CIDSS.

The local government unit of Del Gallego, DSWD, Department of Science and Technology and Department of Agrarian Reform forged a memorandum of agreement to support Barangay San Juan for its bangus processing center.

DOST will provide the equipment and the DAR will provide the training to its beneficiaries.

“We would like to break the cycle of poverty with the support of the people to the national agencies’ programs,” Garcia said.  (MAL-PIA5/Albay)
