Albay celebrates Literacy Week

LEGAZPI CITY, Sept 8 (PIA) – The province of Albay formally opened yesterday the Literacy Week Celebration held every second week of September since 2012 as part of the Albay Literacy Week program created in support to the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) on education.

In accordance to the MDG goal of achieving universal primary education, the provincial government likewise aims to achieve 100 percent participation rate, cohort-survival rate and literacy rate of youth aged 15-24 years old.

Albay governor Joey Salceda led the opening ceremony proudly stating that the province of Albay is one of the few provinces that celebrates Literacy week, expressing that he mandates its celebration because the event is very close to his heart.

“I came here because I believe literacy should be for everyone and it is the PGA’s responsibility to make sure that everyone gets the opportunity to instill this basic fundamental for achieving good wellbeing, because at the end of the day, that’s all that really matters,” Salceda stressed.

Salceda went on to detail the impressive rise of the state of education in Albay under his term but said that all those statistics are merely numbers noting that literacy allows a person to realize his potential and achieve their dreams which in turn will result to good wellbeing not just for the person, but for his family as well.

“Literacy bridges what is available in the outside environment and what is inside you,” the governor said.

The governor explained to the attendees composed of students and teachers from schools all over the province that literacy is the ability to comprehend, how to understand the information and tools available around us and filtering out which ones can be utilized for the personal development of a person.

“It’s like going to social media, you open up your page and see all the posts in your wall, yuou don’t click like to all of them, but you filter out the ones that interests you, literacy is intelligent absorption and conductive response,” Salceda said.

He went on to urge the attendees to “infect” other people with the knowledge that they will be imparted with today, saying that everyone should do their part for Albay to reach 100% literacy rate.

The whole day opening program featured creative writing workshop facilitated by Albay Poet Laureate Engineer Abdon Balde, Jr, readathon, and an hour dedicated to reading a book.(MAL/SAA/PIA-PGA/PIA5/Albay)
