Fast craft soon to ferry passengers, cargo in Tabaco-Catanduanes vice versa routes

VIRAC, Catanduanes, Aug. 24, (PIA) -- A modern catamaran-type waterjet passenger ferry in the Philippines will soon commence operation in Catanduanes traversing the route of Tabaco-Catanduanes.

Said ferry is under Silangan Lines ( Silangan Express 1) being operated by Cardinal Shipping Lines.

According to  Carlito T. Tariman, owner and operator of Cardinal Shipping Lines who is from Bato town, the venture aims to provide innovation for the people of Catanduanes.

He also cited the recent passage of the Philippine Competition Act, aimed at promoting FILIPINO entrepreneurship and making markets more efficient, and Republic Act 9225 or Domestic Shipping Development Act of 2004,which encourages private capital to invest in the shipping industry by creating a healthy and competitive investment and operating environment.

Originally built in Australia, the vessel was recently acquired from Korea shipping firm Seodong Maritime Company,Lltd.

The vessel was registered with the Maritime Industry Authority (Marina-V) under the name M/V Silangan Express 1.

It is double aluminum-hulled passenger craft, called a catamaran, and is driven not by conventional propellers but by two water jet engines, which basically works like the engine of jet aircrafts.

At present, Regina Shipping Lines is the only shipping company operating in the island.

Once operational, Silangan Express 1 will help in providing faster and more convenient travel from Catanduanes to Tabaco. (MAL/EAB-PIA5/ Catanduanes)
