Upgrading of the Legazpi City Convention Center underway

LEGAZPI CITY, July 28 (PIA) -- Construction of the next phase for the completion of Legazpi City Convention Center will commence soon following the approval of the P50 million loan from the Land Bank of the Philippines.

Mayor Noel E. Rosal of this city said in an interview over the weekend that the Legazpi City Government, which he and city treasurer Carlita de Guzman represented, and LBP,  represented by department manager of Legazpi City Branch and account officer Marissa Rito, have formally signed and entered into a loan agreement on July 14, this year.

Engr. Noel B. Encinares, chief of Legazpi City Construction Division, said that the completion of the convention center will cost some P47.01 million for the civil works while P2.9 million  for the installation of sound system, air conditioning, and other fixtures.

He added that the building has a total floor area of 2,165.55 square meters that can accommodate up to 3,000 people while the compound will also be equipped with a parking area with 104 slots.

The construction project, according to Encinares, will be supervised by the Legazpi City Engineering Office and will start next month.

Encinares recalled that the original design of the building was multi-purpose hall type and was built last year, comprised of the sub-structure (phase 1) which costs some P7 million and roofing works, beams, stage, electrical works, comfort rooms and dressing room which costs P18.8 million.

The new loan from LBP will fund the improvement of the project from original multi-purpose hall type into the proposed convention center.

Rosal further stated that this project is part of the preparations carried out by the city government to cope with the increasing demand for venues for national and even international conventions, seminars and other similar assemblies as this city continue to pursue a spot in the Top 5 convention metropolis by 2020 in the country.

“Based on the records of the Legazpi City Tourism Office, at least 33 conventions and seminars drawing thousands of delegates and visitors were held on 2014 in this city. This year, at least 52 similar events were already held here out of the 63 that organizations booked earlier,” he said.

All the major national and international events hosted by the city, according to the mayor,  were a big factor of improving the generation of indirect taxes and benefited the business sector like restaurants, hotel, bars and other establishments much as the income of transport sector.

“The improvement of business activities in this city will help increase government revenue generation  that may pave the way for a bigger share in the Internal Revenue Allotment from the national government ,” Rosal pointed out.   (MAL/EPS-CGLegazpi/PIA5/Albay)
