LEGAZPI CITY, Apr 8 (PIA) – Nearly 9,000 upland farmers and individuals in the Bicol region continue to benefit from the livelihood and agro-forestry programs under the Community-based Forestry Management (CBFM) Program of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
DENR Bicol director Gilbert Gonzales said based from the CBFM data in the region from 2007 to 2015, some 117 sites or a total of 49, 142.34 hectares of forest have been covered by the program benefitting some 8,824 individuals in the whole region.
Gonzales added that the memorandum of agreement has been signed last month between the DENR and implementing people’s organizations for the newly approved CBFM projects in the region this year.
“A total of 305 hectares and 240 beneficiaries were added in the program’s list from the province of Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Albay and Catanduanes,” Gonzales said.
Included in the CBFM program are residents using lands for farming inside or near the identified forest lands or are dependent on forest resources for their livelihood.
These residents were also organized as legitimate people’s organization to represent the concern and interest of each member and to ensure that the forest land entrusted to their care are protected and maintained.
Among the projects implemented under the CBFM program in the region are construction of bunkhouses and nurseries, establishment of agroforestry plantation including forest and fruit trees and vegetable or cash crop production, composting and purchase and distribution of farm carabaos to members of people’s organization.
The CBFM was adopted in the region in 1994 and was implemented in October 10, 1996 under EO no. 263 as a national strategy geared towards sustainable use of forest resources. (MAL/SAA-PIA5/DENR5))
