Bicol unemployment rate down by 21%

LEGAZPI CITY, Mar. 5(PIA) – Unemployment rate in the Bicol region has dropped to 21% said the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

DOLE Bicol director Nathaniel Lacambra said although some see it as a slim drop, it is still significant for thousands of Bicolanos who can feed their families through their the new jobs.

“It’s a very simple analogy, it means that thousands of Bicolanos have jobs now and can feed their families! That’s what this 20% drop means.”  Lacambra said.

DOLE Bicol has verified the unemployment rate drop from the latest labor statistics released by the Philippines Statistics Authority (PSA) which yielded a 21% marginal difference from ratings in 2013 and 2014.

This difference, said Lacambra, is automatically added to the employment rate of the region which is recorded at 95.1% on October 2014 as compared to 93.8% last October 2013 or 1.3% increase at face value.

“Employment and unemployment rate is directly relational. When one goes down the other goes up. If unemployed Bicolanos decrease then it means that employed Bicolanos have increased,” he explained.

Lacambra stressed that the massive implementation of employment and livelihood programs not only by the DOLE RCC Bicol but other government agencies as well based on what was planned under the Regional Development Goal of the Regional Development Council (RDC) may have contributed to the drop in unemployment rate.

Part of these programs have been allotted with about P137M benefitting some 11, 860 Bicolanos.

“Last year we have disbursed a total of P137M for our livelihood and emergency program alone directly and indirectly benefitting a total of 11,860 Bicolanos,” he noted.

Among DOLE’s livelihood programs are Government Internship Program (GIP), Tulong Pangkabuhayan sa Ating Disadvantage Workers (TUPAD), DOLE Kabuhayan Starter Kits (DKSK) and Negosyo Sa Kariton (Nego Kart) Program.(MAL/SAA/DOLE5/PIA5/Albay)
