LEGAZPI CITY, Feb. 10 (PIA) -- The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) regional office here has installed 196 ‘Timbangan ng Bayan’ to all public markets in the cities and municipalities across the Bicol region.
DTI Bicol regional director Jocelyn L.B. Blanco said the agency has set up the "Timbangan ng Bayan" to safeguard the welfare of the consumers by ensuring that they get their money’s worth for the goods they paid for in public markets.
"The measure complements the initiatives of local government units (LGUs) which are tasked to regulate and enforce practices relative to weights and measures through regular calibration of all weighing scales in the public markets and other sites utilizing the same," she said.
DTI encourages consumers to validate or double check the accuracy of the weight of their purchased goods, like fish, meat, rice, and other goods, especially now that there is a ‘Timbangan ng Bayan’ in all public markets.
"This is one way of deterring unscrupulous business or stall owners in public markets from tampering their weighing scales," she added.
Some local governments in Bicol have also installed Price Watch Board for basic commodities at the public markets
DTI has also advised if consumers encounter any abuse or unscrupulous practice among business establishments, they can call the office 4805720 or visit us in our office, 3F Capitol Annex Bldg. in Old Albay District here. (MAL/BMBerango-DTI5/PIA5)
