LEGAZPI CITY, Jan 5 (PIA) – The Department of Health (DOH) has posted a decrease in firecracker-related injuries in the Bicol region before and after the yuletide revelry compared with figures in the previous year.
DOH Bicol medical officer Evy R. Sarmiento revealed that 87 cases across the region were posted from December 21 to January 4 this year compared with 93 cases on the same period in 2013.
Moreover, injuries recorded in the provinces of Albay and Masbate increased to 43 and 15 cases respectively.
In 2013, Masbate has not recorded any injuries while Albay had 41.
The figures dropped in the rest of the provinces with Camarines Sur from 22 to 10, Catanduanes from 2 to zero, Camarines Norte from 16 to 14 and Sorsogon from 20 to 7.
Two cases from Sorsogon were treated and managed at Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital (BRTTH).
Sarmiento noted that of the 87 cases, 42 of which are children with ages 7 – 12 and 19 are teens from 13 to 20 years old. 82 cases involve males.
Piccolo is still the leading cause of injuries with 62 cases followed by kwitis, 5-star and other firecrackers including bombshell, bawang and watusi.
Sarmiento added that the body parts most injured are the hands, eyes, legs and feet and the maxillary area of the face.
