Dangerous Drugs Board trains brgy. officials on effective parenting

By: Bennie A. Recebido

SORSOGON CITY – Responsible parenthood remains to be the most effective warhead in the prevention and control against abuse of prohibited drugs especially among the youths.

Responsible parents are not likely to drive children to drug dependency, said Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) Health Education and Promotion Officer II Nelia L. Fiecas.

Ms. Fiecas defined parents as those that begets or brings forth offspring; parenthood as the position, the function or standing of a parent; while pParenting is nurturing, giving, caring, loving and molding the character of a child.

She presented the Four (4) Styles of Parenting as Inconsistent/Wavering or those too liberated parents and do not set policy; Authoritative where parent controls everything and all the family members; Overprotective where the style of discipline is bound by fears; and Levelling/Democratic where democratic way of disciplining is observed, parents listen to opinion of members in the house and come up with a consensus and more of a consultative type.

Participants were also made to realize the difference between "good parents" and "responsible parents". According to her, good parents are usually well intentioned but nevertheless, their behavior robs their children of self-confidence and independence. They are so involved with their children that they believe they must do everything for them. Responsible parents are more concerned with building their children's feelings of responsibility and self-confidence than in protecting their own image in the community. They give their children choices and let them experience the results of their decisions.

“Responsible parents are geared  towards drug abuse prevention and control among children and youths,” Ms. Fiecas said.

Still according to her, reasons why parents do not notice that their children are into drugs are because parents tend to deny and do not accept that their children are into drugs. They, too, become enabling that they tolerate their children instead of disciplining them or bringing them out of drug addiction. “Most parents have also the shame and blame syndrome,” she added further.

Ms. Fiecas, likewise, stressed the role of parents in drug prevention saying parents should serve as models to their children, build resiliency at home, encourage children's self-worth and self identity by loving and praising them just as they are; truly know their children, their friends and their friends' parents; have a family connectedness to God, and have a family awareness sessions and talk on issues that affect family issues.

The DDB under the Office of the President has been going around  the country in response to the requests of local government units, schools and other organized institutions or groups to conduct seminar-workshops on Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP).

In Sorsogon, the DDB partnered with the Sorsogon City-LGU through City Mayor Sally A. Lee and the Sorsogon City Anti-Drug Abuse Council (SCADAC) through City Vice-Mayor Ma. Charo Dichoso-Logronio to realize the seminar-workshop on STEP held on August 6, 2014 at the Vicenta Hall in Sorsogon City.

“The activity primarily aimed to increase local officials' awareness especially in the barangay level on the root cause of drug use and dependency and in responding to  drug abuse problem in their respective communities,” said Vice Mayor Logronio.

Close to 80 participants attended the activity composed of brgy. officials from the 10 drug infected barangays in Sorsogon City, the PNP, media and other stakeholders. (AAN/BARecebido, PIA-5/Sorsogon)
