Salceda joins US Ambassador to open Special Olympics in Albay

LEGAZPI CITY, July 14 (PIA) -- Albay Governor Joey Salceda welcomed United States Ambassador Philip Goldberg  and joined him in the opening the Special Olympics for persons with intellectual disabilities at the Bicol UniversityInstitute of Physical Education, Sports and Recreation Track and Field this morning.

Albay hosted for the first time the Special Olympics that has since been helping create an environment and community of inclusion providing individuals with intellectual disabilities the opportunities to realize their potentials, develop their physical fitness and experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship.

In his message, Salceda thanked the esteemed guests from the US Government and partner institutions for their kindness and saluted their efforts for organizing the said event for the people of Albay with intellectual disabilities.

“Kindness and charity are two big words that I learned from my parents, these words entail doing good and extending help to others whom you know would have no way of helping you in return,” Salceda said.

“What better way would kindness and charity be demonstrated than in helping persons with intellectual disabilities to contribute in their physical, social and psychological development through successful experiences in competitive sports,” he further added.

Salceda likened the motto of the Special Olympics: “Let Me Win, But If I Cannot Win Let Me Be Brave in the Attempt,” to the resilience and indomitable spirit of the Albayanos in adapting to and mitigating the adverse effects of climate change and the destructive forces of nature.

“We may not be able to win against the mighty forces of nature, but we must be brave in trying to,” Salceda stated.

In attendance to the two-day sports events and funfares were  at least 250 participants with intellectual disabilities from all over the province of Albay which was organized by the United States Peace Corps, Peace Corps Philippines Director Denny Robertson and Peace Corps Volunteers and Special Olympics Philippines Director Kaye Samson also graced the opening ceremonies along with representatives of the Special Olympics International.
