All roads in Bicol passable – DPWH

BY: JOSEPH JOHN J. PEREZ

LEGAZPI CITY, July 21 (PIA) – The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) confirmed today that all major roads in the entire Bicol region are passable following typhoon Glenda (international name : Rammasun) wrecked havoc in the region on Tuesday, July 15.

“All (national and secondary) roads in the region are passable since Friday last week,” DPWH Bicol public information officer Lucy Castañeda told the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) in a text message today.

Castañeda in the same message also relayed reports from DPWH First District Engineering Office (DEO) in Masbate saying that that Narangasan Bridge along Tawad – Balud junction road in Masbate was temporarily closed due to damages caused by the typhoon, however, a detour set up in the vicinity is already passable to light vehicles since Sunday, July 20,

As early as Wednesday, July 16, the day after the typhoon, Castañeda said that the Legazpi – Sorsogon Maharlika Highway has been already passable to all types of vehicles.

Even the roads to Bulan and Matnog in the province of Sorsogon were passable since Wednesday, Castañeda added. Bulan and Matnog are important links to the Visayas with its ports serving roll-on-roll-off (RORO) route.

“Our clearing operations are still on-going with numerous trees, electrical posts, transmission towers, houses and other debris still scattered and causing heavy traffic along roads and highways,” Castañedas said.

Castañeda added that DPWH Bicol is prioritizing the clearing of roads and highways to expedite transport of relief operations to areas badly hit by the typhoon and for other agencies and sectors to implement their rehabilitation works in the region.

Earlier, DPWH reminded the public on the dangers of planting trees and constructing houses on the roadsides that pose dangers and hazards especially during calamities. (MAL/JJJP-PIA5)
