‘Filipino time’ to set goals, direction and thinking for development prospects and policy directions – DOST

BY: JOSEPH JOHN J. PEREZ

LEGAZPI CITY, Jan. 23 (PIA) -- The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) now adopts the slogan “Juan Time is always on time” commencing on in carrying out science and technology (S&T) initiatives and undertakings that will set the pace for others to follow suit.

"The campaign pursues "One Time, One Goal, One Direction and One Thinking” and that ‘Juan’ is a generic name for Filipinos and ‘Filipino time’ was synonymous then for being late but this notion will soon be replaced with positive outlook," DOST Bicol public information officer Pilita Lucena said during the “Aramon Ta Daw (Let Us Know)” radio program of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) this week.

“As mandated to provide central direction, leadership and coordination of all scientific and technological efforts toward the achievement of maximum economic and social benefits for the people, DOST is determined in making a difference in the country,” Lucena said.

On February 4, 2013, the Republic Act 10535 known as the Philippine Standard Time (PST) Act of 2013 was enacted into law requiring all national and government offices to display the PST on their official time devices, including bundy clocks, synchronized with the official time provided by the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) as mandated keeper of the Philippine Standard Time (PST)

DOST-Pagasa as mandated keeper of the Philippine Standard Time (PST) is committed to continuously serve Filipinos through quality, relevant and appropriate S &T initiatives and undertakings.

The law also stated sanctions for violations specifically for owners of private television and radio stations who failed to calibrate and synchronize their time devices with the PST during their broadcast shall be penalized with a fine of not less than P30,000.00 but not more than P50,000.00 on the first offense and revocation and cancellation of their franchise to operate on the second offense.

The law also ordered all national and local government offices including all public and private schools to conduct a continuing information campaign about the value of time and the need to respect the time of others in order that the people may realize the imperative of synchronizing the official time.

The PST Act of 2013 also institutionalized the celebration of the National Time Consciousness Week every first week of January yearly. With PST law, ‘Filipino time’ will now be known as exact time.

Now it is time to calibrate and synchronize our time devices, including our attitude, to the ‘new’ Filipino time if we desire for changes, development and progress. (JJJP-PIA5/Albay)
