Albay, OCD Bicol deploy humanitarian team for quake victims in Bohol

LEGAZPI CITY, Oct 17 (PIA) – The joint Team Albay and Office of Civil Defence (OCD) Bicol has deployed starting Wednesday night until today 80 personnel for the  humanitarian mission to provide support and recovery assistance to the communities heavily devastated by magnitude 7.2 eathquake in Bohol Tuesday.

Albay Gov. Joey Salceda said the humanitarian mission will initially focus on damage and needs assessment to determine the much needed interventions the mission will provide, consequently, will cater to the needs of the communities in terms of hospital care, potable water supply support, technical support and psycho-social efforts as identified by the Team Albay-OCD Bicol disaster management team.

Salceda added that the team is composed of search and rescue units from the Bureau of Fire Protection and Tactical Operations Group 5 of the Philippine Air Force, medical and social welfare team from the Bicol Regional Training and Teaching Hospital (BRTTH), Provincial Health Office (PHO) and Albay Public Safety and Emnergency Office (APSEMO), and a water sanitation team from the Provincial Engineering Office and the PHO sanitation personnel.

“These are experts and skilled in this field of missionary work from the APSEMO, Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office, PHO-Albay Health and Emergency Monitoring team, Department of Health Bicol regional office and the Team Armed Forces of the Philippines,” he said.

The water and sanitation (WatSan) team composed of one officer, six navy enlisted personnel and six army men, brought with them the water purifying machine and paraphernalia onboard two military trucks that will also be ferreid by navy ships from Albay to Bohol.

"They will help provide the communities with available drinking water which as of now is among the essential needs of many communities still suffering from shortage of potable water due to damaged pipelines and loss of electricity," Salceda said.

The water purifying machine of capable of converting contaminated waters into a reliable drinking water.  About 30,000 liters of potable water per hour are being produced by the equipment.

The humanitarian mission to Bohol is Team ALbay-OCD5 10th such deployment outside Albay, as it had also already served in such places as Cagayan, Isabela, Catanduanes, Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental as well as in the cities of Cagayan de Oro, Laguna, Cavite and even in Metro Manila.

Aside from sending the humanitarian mission, Albay is to extend cash assistance of P500,000 each to the provinces of Bohol and Cebu, which are sister provinces of Albay, Salceda said. The mission will probably last for 10 days, depending on the needs, Salceda added.  (MAL/SAA/PIA5-Albay)
