SSS AlkanSSSya program facilitates premium payments of self employed, informal sectors' workers in Albay

BY: SALLY A. ATENTO

LEGAZPI CITY, Sept 10 (PIA) - The Social Security System (SSS) launched its AlkanSSSya program in the province of Albay as an easier and affordable alternative to help self-employed individuals and informal sector workers to pay premiums and avail of the benefits offered by the agency.

“This program is intended for informal sector workers and self-employed individuals who find it hard to pay their monthly contribution in full due to low or limited income. Informal sectors include tricycle drivers, farmers, market vendors and other self-employed individuals,” said SSS Legazpi Branch officer-in-charge Ermina Maria Robredo.

The concept of the AlkanSSSya program, according to Robredo during the "Ugnayan sa Bikol" radio program of Philippine Information AGency (PIA) Bicol, is derived from the piggy-bank like savings system commonly practiced by Filipino households which allow members to daily deposit a minimum amount that would sum up to their regular monthly membership contribution.

“Members of this program need to pay at least P10 – P12 per day to the organization to come up with the P312 minimum monthly contribution. The cabinet type piggy bank, usually sponsored by their respective local government units, will serve as a coin bank or depository for each member’s daily contribution,” Robredo explained.

“The depository will be under the responsibility of two officers designated by the organization. The contribution will be counted and remitted monthly to the SSS assisted and witnessed by members and SSS account officers” she added.

In Albay the initial sectors tapped for the program are the tricycle operators and drivers association (TODA) in Legazpi, ceramic and pottery workers association in Tiwi and organic farmers in Tabaco.

Once the minimum montly contribution has been paid, members can be assured of receiving the same benefits given to regular SSS members.

“We have the so-called 3-12-36-120 benefits scheme. By paying at least three months contribution, the member is entitled to avail of sickness, maternity or funeral claim in case of death amounting to P20, 000.
For 12 months contribution we have the educational loan, salary and disability loan for 36 months and pension for 120 months,” Robredo said.

Other sectors and individuals such as housewives and entrepeneurs are also encouraged to be part of the program by formally organizing their groups.

With this program, Robredo said, members can make little sacrifices to save for their family’s security especially in cases of death, sickness or disability instead of spending a part of their income in buying cigarette and other vices.

“It will also be easier for them since they don’t have to fall in long lines since they simply need to give their contribution to the organization in their barangay,” she added.

Interested applicants can coordinate with their respective LGUs or personally visit the SSS office for further information and assistance.(MAL/SAA/PIA5-Albay)
