'Linggo ng Kabataan' manifests vital role of SK

By Benilda A. Recebido

SORSOGON CITY, Dec 27 (PIA) -- Republic Act 7160, known as the Local Government Code of 1991 directs the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) as the youth representation in various civic and social gatherings, and arranges activities in response to national as well as local issues and concerns.

Said decree prompted the SK Provincial Federation of Sorsogon headed by Patrick Lee Rodrigueza to carry out various activities as a way of observing the annual “Linggo ng Kabataan” activity.

The SK here, together with the provincial government of Sorsogon, the Public Employment Service Office, and the Department of Labor and Employment, organized a job fair on December 13-14 for career hunters.
Linking up with four local and overseas agencies, the job fair registered a total number of 216 applicants.

A First Aid and Basic Life Support workshop was conducted on December 15 for members of the SK Provincial Federation at the Sorsogon National High School together with the “Linggo ng Kabataan” events. This was supported by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), headed Raden D. Dimaano, and engineer.

The event was joined by Sorsogon’s champion on climate change, former governor Sally Ante Lee, who urged the SK for their further commitment to saving Mother Earth.

“I hope that in due time you will learn and take responsibility in protecting our environment,” she said.

Earlier, the SK headed by board member Rodrigueza, expressed their enthusiasm to implement programs under Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and to timely respond to the adverse effects of climate change.

The SK also had a tree-planting activity on December 16.

In coordination with forest ranger Wilfredo F. Duran Jr., Captain Arnel G. Sabas of the 903rd Infantry Brigade, and Brgy. Chairman Floro A. Mirabel, SK members planted acacia mangium, mahogany, and narra tree saplings in Barangay Amomonting, Castilla.

“The Campostella Valley tragedy was just one of the terrible catastrophes that hit the country and manifested insufficiency in preparedness and awareness of disaster risk reduction," Rodrigueza said.

“With any luck, these laudable activities will benefit responsive and active stakeholders in reducing risks during disasters and other calamities here in Sorsogon,” he further said. (VAELabalan, PIO/BAR-PIA 5, Sorsogon)
