Catanduanes holds earthquake drill for students, employees

By Edna A. Bagadiong

VIRAC, Catanduanes, July 21 (PIA) -- An earthquake drill was conducted by the Catanduanes State Colleges on July 17.

The drill, held at three-floor administration building, aims to prepare students and employees for emergency situations as directed by the Commission on Higher Education Central and Regional Offices and in observance of National Disaster Consciousness Month.

The team from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) headed by its chief, Engr. Nieva Santelices, in coordination with the CSC School Disaster Management Committee, facilitated the briefing and simulated the earthquake drill.

The Philippine Red Cross Catanduanes Chapter, Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) and the Philippine Army also provided technical expertise in a dry-run response, rescue and evacuation operations.

The rescue simulation included a fire truck dousing a burning portion of the administration building’s second floor; the Red Cross team and a squad of Philippine Army, assisted by CSC Medical Services rescuing two injured victims from third floor to ground floor--one through a wheelchair and the other from rappelling--in a mock-up scenario where the corridors become impassable due to littered crushed concrete slabs and broken glasses.

Santelices enjoined the CSC community to take to the heart the earthquake drill so as to prevent any injury and loss of lives during a real event.

The drill team, with the participation of CSC employees and students, executed the Stage 4 of the Actual Conduct of Drill culled from the DOST-PhiVolcs Manual on "How to Conduct and Earthquake Drill in School," specifically the Alarm, Response, Evacuation, Assembly, Head Count and Evaluation.

Prior to the activity, the PRDDMC oriented the CSC School Disaster Management on disaster preparedness and response operations.

Last week, the BFP also conducted a fire drill at the 3-storey Science Laboratory building of the College of Arts and Sciences. (MAL/EAB/GSR/CSC-PIA5)
