MANILA, Jan. 21 (PIA) -- Hundreds of delegates from civil society organizations, government policy makers, program implementers and development partners since Tuesday, Jan. 21 for the 7th Asia-Pacific Conference on Reproductive Sexual Health and Rights (APCRSHR) at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City.
Dr. Eden Divinagracia, chairperson of the International Steering Committee, said the four day conference will provide the venue for the stakeholders to examine the region’s performance, current good practices for diverse population segments (adolescents and youth, women of reproductive age, men, and the elderly), the roles and accountability of different stakeholders, as well as lessons learned, issues and challenges in realizing the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Program of Action and in attaining the RSHR-related MDGs.
This year's conference is the country's second hosting of the 7th APCRSHR in time for the 20th year after the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) was held in Cairo and the year before the reckoning of the Millennium Developoment Goals (MDG) achievements.
This year’s APCRSHR evolved on the theme "Examining Achievements, Good Practices and Challenges: Towards a Strategic Positioning of RSHR for All."
The conference takes place on the 20th year after the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) was held in Cairo and the year before the reckoning of the Millennium Developoment Goals (MDG) achievements.
Divinagracia furthered that the gathering will also generate new paradigms, innovative ideas and strategies that would address emerging RSHR issues and challenges beyond 2015,” she said.
"Alike the previous conferences, we will ensure that this gathering will be a productive and enjoyable learning experience for all the participants and our development partners," she said.
The 1st APCRSHR was convened in Metro Manila in 2001 by the Philippine NGO Council (PNGOC) on Population, Health, and Welfare Inc.
This event took place two years after a group of Asians who attended the 1999 ICPD +5 Review in The Hague assessed that the Asia-Pacific Civil Society Organizations (CSO) needed to come together with our development partners to regularly review RSHR issues, challenges and actions. CSOs in Thailand, Malaysia, India, China, and Indonesia have successfully convened the subsequent conferences every two years. The PNGOC is again honored to host the 2014 APCRSHR.
“the 7th APCRSHR promises to be a great opportunity to take stock of the Asia-Pacific countries’ many good practices, lessons, and challenges in meeting our commitments to the 1994 ICPD Program of Action and to the RSHR-related MDGs,” Divinagracia also said.
“I am optimistic that CSOs in partnership with professional health practitioners, health and social workers, parliamentarians, donors, social scientists, and governments would arrive at viable scenarios beyond 2015 that would strategically position RSHR for all,” she added. (MAL/MDR-PGAlbay/PIA5)
