LEGAZPI CITY, Dec. 6 (PIA) – Albayanos joined today the entire world in mourning for the loss, yet with great admiration to the legacy and examples of Nelson Mandela known for his willingness to forgive and forget, and reconciliation to bring peace not only to his homeland but also to the entire world.
Albay Governor Joey Salceda stated Nelson Mandela is and will forever be an icon for Albay's governance as the greatest acts of Mandela are no vindictiveness, total forgiveness and like Cory, leaving office voluntarily and totally.
“Albay calls such ‘constant kindnesses’, our first principle of governance,” Salceda said
“So, I feel his example to be so alive in our province and among our people that I just cannot feel the sadness because for me his ideas have not passed away,” he added.
Salceda furthered, “For us and for the Philippines in current milieu, the best way to honor Mandela is to forgive your enemies, with a genuine forgiveness, and forget their past, both petty and grand, transgressions with no retribution.
He said forgiveness should be beyond the hurting of your enemies, that they can not hurt you anymore, quouting Mandela’s "As I walked out the door toward the gate that would lead to my freedom, I knew if I didn’t leave my bitterness and hatred behind, I'd still be in prison."
Nelson Mandela's life proves that no one becomes great by hating for "love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite".
The former South African president Mandela, who also fought apartheid and served for 27 years in prison for his cause, died of lingering illness at the age of 95. (MAL-PIA5/Albay)
