LEGAZPI CITY, November 20 (PIA) – Officials and volunteers of the civil society organization, Aklat, Gabay, Aruga, tungo sa Pag-angat at Pag-asa (AGAPP) Foundation will turn over 24 school buildings in 24 schools across the Bicol region tomorrow to help augment efforts of the government to provide adequate clasrooms in the country.
Pinky Aquino- Abellada, sister of President Benigno S. Aquino III, will lead the AGAPP Foundation officers and Asian Development Bank (ADB) officials the ceremonial and symbolic turnover Friday, Nov. 21, in Camarines Sur of the school building project dubbed “Silid Pangarap” classrooms for 24 schools in four provinces in the region.
The turnover rites will be held at Pamukid Elementary School in San Fernando, Camarines Sur wherein school officials of other beneficiary-schools will be in attendance. Similar activity will also be held in Minalabac Central School and San Miguel Elementary School in Bato, Camarines Sur.
“Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Masbate and Sorsogon each have six schools benefitting from the project," Pinoy Power Bicol Coalition Incorporated President Dr. Ofelia Samar-Sy told the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Bicol.
A “Silid Pangarap” two-classroom building is furnished with tables, chairs, cabinets, library, toys and equipped with a toilet.
"The ADB financed the construction of the 24 school buildings with a total of 48 classrooms, together with similar classrooms constructed in Bacolod and Negros," Samar-Sy said.
The four provinces were selected through assessment and recommendation of the Department of Education (DepEd) based on the identified needs of the school and number of Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries in the area.
Bicol region is the first region outside Metro Manila that benefited from the "Silid Pangarap" project of AGAPP piloting in the province of Albay in Taysan Elementary School in Legazpi City; Daraga North Central School and Anislag Elementary School both in Daraga, Albay.
Also, three school buidings with six classrooms in three schools in Tiwi town were constructed sponsored by the Aboitiz Foundation, Samar-Sy told the PIA.
“Albay already has 12 "Silid Pangarap" classrooms in six schools,” Samar-Sy added.
The classroom project also includes teachers training with a livelihood component for the community. As of today, a total of 80 classrooms were already constructed by AGAPP in Bicol benefitted by 40 schools.
All over the country, more than 600 classrooms were already constructed by AGAPP. The group still needs to construct around 400 classrooms all over the Philippines to reach its target of 1,000 classrooms by the year 2016.
The project seeks to achieve the twin goals of enhancing the public school’s resources for supporting literacy development and for providing a basic early childhood care and development (ECCD) service for 5 year olds through the preschool program.
AGAPP helps by providing the physical facilities and essential tools and materials that serve these dual purposes with a capacity-building program to motivate teachers and school heads to organize and facilitate developmentally-appropriate child and family-focused activities.
The project also facilitates and promotes the convergence of other essential child- and family- focused interventions such as supplementary feeding, health promotion, extended day or child care support, micro-enterprise for parents implemented by non-government organizations, civic organizations or the municipality and barangay-based service providers.
