LEGAZPI CITY, Nov. 19 (PIA) – The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) office in Region 8 based in Tacloban City may commence release within this week of the P50 million livelihood assistance fund to qualified locales in the region, according to DOLE Bicol regional director Nathaniel Lacambra.
Lacambra relayed in a press statement that P50M will provide livelihood assistance and Emergency Wage Employment Assistance (EWEA) to beneficiaries.
“The idea is to give immediate jobs to victims of the super typhoon, with DOLE paying for their salaries while working for cleaning canals and drainage systems.” Lcambra said.
Assessment conducted by DOLE, according to Lacambra, showed that most of the victims lost their jobs , livelihood and sources of income either working for an employer or their own ventures. This is the main reason why the EWEA program has been put in place.
The transfer and utilization of the P50M livelihood fund was ordered by DOLE Sec. Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz early this week to fast track rehabilitation in Tacloban City.
“DOLE’s command post in Tacloban City has since been operational and personnel from local DOLE office are slowly coming back to work. With the help of the augmentation team, we are projecting that DOLE services especially on livelihood may be up this week,” Lacambra added.
EWEA is the concept adapting the modern-day bayanihan system, such will provide income for the beneficiaries while help clear and clean the debris from the surroundings.
DOLE intended to implement the program first in the nearby village of the office then to other areas.
As of press time, DOLE Bicol chief Exequiel Ronnie A. Guzman observed that residents from nearby barangays are coming to DOLE-Tacloban City to inquire and avail of services such as livelihood and libreng tawag (free calls). (MAL/RPE-DOLE5/PIA5)
