LEGAZPI CITY, Sept. 11 (PIA) – The Department of Health Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD) in Bicol will be hosting the 15th National Sandugo awarding ceremony for Luzon and Visayas contenders at the Oriental Hotel here on September 12 this year.

DOH Bicol regional director Gloria Balboa said the National Sandugo Award is the highest award given annually to local government executives who showed outstanding support, commitment and involvement to the National Voluntary Blood Services Program (NVBSP) of the government.

The award, added Balboa, is initiated by the DOH to recognize barangay captains, mayors and governors for their active involvement in the advocacy of maintaining adequate blood supply in the country through mobile blood donation activities.

It also aims to encourage local officials to spearhead and be personally involved and committed to the NVBSP.

Among the criteria for qualifying to the awards include personal involvement and commitment in the implementation of NVBSP; provision of resources in the implementation of NVBSP in his/her area; being instrumental for the high percentage of voluntary blood donors relative to the total population of the nominee's area of jurisdiction which includes blood donations collected by Blood Service facilities of DOH, LGUs and PRC and private hospitals with to operate to collect blood donations; administrative issuance/s in support of NVBSP within the last three (3) years

The advocacy for Voluntary Blood Donation was intensified in 1994 when the congress passed theRepublic Act 7719 and signed by then President Fidel V. Ramos.

This policy further mobilized government agencies and private organizations to promote voluntary blood donation and collect the lifesaving fluid. (MAL/SAA-PIA5/Albay)
