VIRAC, Catanduanes, Sept. 11 (PIA) - In time for its 73rd anniversary celebration, the National Statistics Office (NSO) provincial office here spearheaded a Blood Donation recently to instill among the public and employees the need to care-for-others in the form of volunteerism and to be able to give hope to others and save lives.
According to officer-in-charge Anavi F. Camacho of NSO Catanduanes, the blood donation activity conformed to address the ever growing demand of blood in the province.
Bea T. Cruz of Philippine Red Cross chapter n Catanduanes, the demand for blood was high in every part of the province because needy patients mostly those involved in road accidents, cancer patients, and those in serious medical conditions mostly need blood transfusion and would have to rely only on a small percentage of blood donors in the country.
A recent statistics by the World Health Organization (WHO) shows that in middle-income countries such as the Philippines, the median blood donation stands only at 12.6 individuals per 1000 population.
This means that roughly 1.2% of the population donates blood which is extremely below than the number of people who need blood transfusion every now and then.
The recent effort of the NSO was able to increase the stockpile of blood in the province by around 14 bags.
More than thirty (30) individuals have been screened but only few passed to be a qualified donor. The screening is made to ensure safety and high-quality of blood.
Various government agencies and private establishments were invited on the blood donation campaign. (MAL/EAB-PIA5/Catanduanes)

maybe you are referring to blood donors in the province not in the country because you are talking of incidents in Catanduanes.
